Shazam is a comic book superhero originally created in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parkerand and first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (Feb. 1940). Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) was published in Fawcett Comics and then later in DC Comics but due trademarks that happened in between the two comic companies by Marvel Comics, DC Comics had to promote Captain Marvel and the family under the Shazam title.
Shazam is a powerful magician that as a child received his powers from 6 ancient gods (Voldar, Lumiun, Arel, Ribalvei, Elbiam, and Marzosh) to become their Champion. As time went on, Shazam needed a successor and found one by the name of Teth-Adam. Over time though, Adam became corrupted by the power and Shazam tried to strip him of his powers and banished him. Over time, Shazam found a new successor, a child named Billy Batson. Billy Batson, after saying Shazam's (an acronym of the 6 gods [Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury] that have given their powers for the cause) name, becomes Captain Marvel. Friends and family of Billy have also been able to share this power and been known as the Marvel family.
